New Unifi products from Ubiquiti

The network landscape has changed quite a bit in the last few years.
1G (Gigabit) speeds are now the low end standard and 2.5G, 10G, and 25G are readily available for more demanding use cases.

On the WiFi side - 2G  (GigaHertz) is now old and mainly used for light trafic IoT devices like thermostats. 5G is in heavy use with 6G and 7G availble for those with a need for speed!

Home Network Architecture

Over the years I've had the pleasure of helping my customers improve their home networks.
Many people have included a home office and/or work from home activities into their modern routines.
This has resulted in endless frustration from weak connetions and slow speeds.

I have learned what best works in our larger homes.
My approach and the equipment I recommend is business grade.
My solutions typically have to remedy years of band-aid solutions and layers of failed DIY.

My approach:

  • We begin by stipping ALL the legacy attempts to create a network.
This includes removing mesh units, old telephone terminations, coaxial cable TV hookups, etc.
  • We establish a single source input for the internet access (aka "WAN").
This would be the cable modem or fiber optic feed.
  • We identify existing wiring if available and run new lines as required
to create a stable and reliable wire backbone to build upon.
  • Add in the workhorse hardware:
    • Powerful firewall/controller/recorder. (i.e. UDM-Pro)
    • Network switches.
    • Access points for WiFi,  Cameras and accessories
    • Clean power is provided with a UPS battery.

FAQ

Wire closet relocation

Do you have a wire closet that is badly located?
Often it is in a child's bedroom closet or some other inconvient place.

I have been asked many times if these can be moved to another location.
The short answer - YES!
However...
The process is very labor intensive and can have significant costs for time and materials.
I have done a number of these jobs and can help plan yours if interested!

The more common solution is to move the wires up from the builder's "structured wiring cabinet" to a new rack above the closet shelf. See an example HERE

Business grade resilient networks

The equipment I recommend works so well because it is designed for the needs of business.
A business environment can have even greater needs for reliability and redundancy.
This need has been address by Ubiquiti through their "Enterprise" and "Campus" products.
